This season, we celebrate the diversity of our Festál community partners in this Winterfest Virtual Festál series. You'll find performances, cooking and craft demonstrations and other holiday traditions presented in video form. Enjoy learning about seasonal traditions from around the globe. In partnership with Northwest Folklife, we kick things off on November 27th with Our Big Neighborhood at Seattle Center Winterfest. New content will be added every Saturday in December, so come back frequently for more.

Diwali: Lights of India | Cooking Demonstration

Diwali, the ancient festival of light observed across the globe by over a billion people, is celebrated here at Seattle Center Festál. As a Winterfest treat, our friends at Diwali: Lights of India share a delicious traditional recipe that may just become one of your own holiday favorites.

Joining the tradition of Seattle Center Winterfest, Northwest Folklife  supports our opening weekend celebration with  cultural performances and activities that bring families together in a virtual space!  Check out three offerings from them below, available starting November 27th.

Northwest Folklife and Seattle Center, both dedicated to breaking down barriers through cultural inclusion and understanding, create events co-curated with Northwest communities. Our Big Neighborhood offers accessible programming to positively impact children and families by providing early childhood cultural understanding and encouraging families to stay active and learn together – to build stronger communities.

Dunava Balkan Choir

Dunava (“the Danube”) is Seattle’s premier Balkan women’s choir, made up of singers with a passion for intricate harmonies, and approaching each song, whether lament or celebration, with authenticity and respect.

Geoducks Youth Old Time Band

Seattle natives Henry, Hank and Diego began playing music as soon as they could get their hands on instruments. Now moving into their teens, Hank is first a classical violinist, Henry a jazz pianist, and Diego a jazz clarinetist. As The Geoducks, they find common ground in a mix of upbeat old-time, bluegrass, folk, jazz, blues, and a smattering of other genres. They all contribute vocals, Hank plays fiddle and mandolin, Henry piano, mandolin and drums, and Diego clarinet. The Geoducks draw crowds of old and young alike at Folklife, farmers markets, and neighborhood festivals.

Cooking Tortillas with Francisca Garcia

Francisca is the founder of Machtia, Mexican Cultural Consultant. She’s a Folklorist, Culture and Tradition Bearer, Curator, Artist, Teacher, Lecturer. Her work has been seen in Centro de la Raza, Sea Mar Museum, Northwest Folklife, Mexican Consulate of Seattle, and Rainier Art Center.

Holidays of Diversity Artshow

Holidays of Diversity is a 2019 project between A/NT Gallery and Seattle Center Festal, offering a visual showcase of what holidays in real American homes looks like. Most of our families are a cultural mix and mash of Americana and the cultures of our parents and grandparents. The mission of the show is to delight and entertain while also educating the public on the cultural diversity of holiday traditions from around the world.

The show features artwork by local artists from Seattle Arab Festival, Seattle's French Fest: A Celebration of French-Speaking Cultures, Pagdiriwang Philippine Festival, Polish Festival Seattle and Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival.
