Spirit of Africa is May 10: 12pm-8pm at the Armory Food & Event Hall. The festival is part of the Seattle Center Festál series. It is free and open to the public.

Seattle Center Festál is a year-round series of 25 free cultural festivals, produced in partnership with community organizations. Arsalan Ibrahim

Hailing from Oakland, California, Arsalan's roots trace back to the rich traditions of his Songhai and Mende ancestors. Despite the trials of history, his family has safeguarded these timeless customs, and Arsalan's storytelling skill brings these ancient tales to life with every note.

Mali, the heart of West Africa, holds a musical legacy that deeply resonates with Arsalan's reverence for tradition. From the mesmerizing melodies of the Kora to Mali's vibrant traditional music, the country's cultural fabric is adorned with rhythm, melody, and narratives that captivate the soul.

An essential aspect of Mali's music is its role in cultural expression and community cohesion. From griots preserving oral history to vibrant festivals celebrating life's milestones, music is woven into the fabric of Malian society, uniting people in joy, sorrow, and celebration.

Hortada Dance Group

Straight from Eritrea, this talented dance group will grace the stage with their captivating performances, showcasing the rich heritage and diversity of Eritrean dance and music.

Dawcoumba Diop & Pape Modou Diop

All the way from Sweden, it’s a family affair! The brothers will perform with their father, and brother, Thione Diop.

Thione Diop is a Senegalese percussionist, master of the djembe and other African percussion instruments, and a descendant of a Griot drumming family. He is known for his powerful and expressive performances, and his ability to connect with audiences through West African music and culture. Thione moved to Seattle in 1998 and has since become a well-known figure in the Pacific Northwest, teaching and performing, and creating events like the Spirit of Africa Festival.

Franco Attk (Rimnongdo Francis Ramde)

Rimnongdo Francis Ramde, better known by his stage name Franco, is a musical artist hailing from Burkina Faso, a country known for its vibrant culture and rich musical traditions. Franco embarked on his musical journey in 2015 as the lead singer for a band in his hometown. Burkina Faso, located in the heart of West Africa, is a land of diverse ethnic groups, each contributing to the country's unique cultural tapestry.

From the rhythmic beats of traditional drumming to the melodious sounds of local instruments, music plays a central role in Burkina Faso's social fabric and identity. Franco's music beautifully reflects his Burkina heritage, with heartfelt lyrics that often address themes of love, hope, and despair. His soulful melodies resonate deeply with audiences, capturing the essence of Burkina Faso's musical soul.

In July 2023, Franco released his highly anticipated debut album, "ELDORADO," showcasing his musical prowess and storytelling abilities. Collaborating with artists from Burkina Faso and Kenya, Franco brings a diverse and dynamic sound to the forefront of the music scene.

Be captivated by the irresistible rhythms of Zimbabwean marimba music, echoing the vibrant spirit and cultural richness of the "Land of Great Warriors"!

Anokye Agofomma & Yao Amponsah

Anokye has expanded its repertoire by drawing inspiration from and including other West African drumming and dance traditions. Operating with respect, versatility and pure musicianship, Anokye is a multi-cultural and multi-generational group dedicated to promoting world music at its best. The group has performed in the Seattle area on many festive occasions such as Folklife, Spirit of Africa and World Rhythm Festival as well as many events in the broader community.

As a young boy, Yao Amponsah was immersed in the complex drumming culture of the “Ashanti” people. A versatile percussionist, he plays many styles of music from Ghana such as Fontomfrom, Adowa, Kete, Akom, and kpanlogo.

Formed in 2016, Kwetu Band is on a mission to redefine African music by blending it with diverse styles, resulting in a truly unique and exceptional sound. Known for their captivating performances and infectious rhythms, Kwetu Band never fails to mesmerize audiences wherever they go. With their unwavering dedication to their craft and a profound love for music, Kwetu Band is poised to make a significant impact on the music industry.

Straight from Zimbabwe and one of Africa’s brightest stars, this award-winning singer-songwriter, producer, and powerhouse performer will take you on a journey through sound and soul with music that blends soul, R&B, folk, pop, jazz, rock, and oriental influences—creating an ethereal, heartfelt, and organic universe you won’t want to miss.
