SEATTLE CENTER | THE NEXT 50 | APRIL 21 - OCTOBER 21, 2012
The Next Fifty at Seattle Center, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, concluded on October 21, 2012, a date corresponding to the closing day of World’s Fair 50 years ago. It was a memorable and fitting end to six months of outstanding programs, exhibits and special activities in recognition of the World’s Fair and the physical legacy it left.
Although The Next Fifty has ended, we hope that its legacy will live on in the community connections and partnerships that were created during the celebration. Hundreds of organizations participated in the effort. More than 400 volunteers donated over 10,000 hours to support Next 50 planning and programming, and at least 260 committee members supported over 400 anniversary events.
A special thank-you to all who joined in The Next Fifty. Over the six months of the celebration, our community engaged in real and meaningful dialogue addressing areas of importance to our future: sustainable futures, science and technology, global health, learning, commerce and innovation and civic action. At the same time, we honored this valued place and celebrated the astonishing arts, cultural and civic center it has become.
As we look ahead, we hope that the weighty issues raised, ideas introduced and discussions pursued over the course of The Next Fifty will resonate far into the future in ways that inspire individual achievement and collective action among those in our region who are striving to positively affect the world.
