So, Teen Tixers: if you’re interested in working with other teens to plan really cool parties and special events for the Teen Tix community at Teen Tix venues, getting to meet professional artists and create opportunities for Teen Tix members to share their work and meet each other, send an email to teentix@seattle.gov with the subject line “Teen Nights” and we will forward it along to Nur, who will get in touch with you with more details.

P.S. The first order of business of the Teen Nights Committee will be coming up with a better name than “Teen Nights Committee”.

PICK OF THE WEEK
ROBOTS @ Science Fiction Museum
SEATTLE CENTER

Robots: A Designer’s Collection of Miniature Mechanical Marvels celebrates our long fascination with humankind’s technological version of itself. This exhibition draws from a one-of-a-kind assemblage of toy robots, which noted designer Tom Geismar has been collecting for decades. Inspired by antique tin and wooden toys, samurai warriors and mid-20th century Japanese film characters, these intricately detailed and beautifully designed miniatures are set against EMP|SFM’s backdrop of life-sized robots, androids and cyborgs from the world of science fiction film and television.

The Science Fiction Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

For more info, visit www.empsfm.org

SFM is located at the base of the Space Needle on the Seattle Center campus. It is served by buses 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 13, 16, 26, 28, 74, 82 and several others, along with the Seattle Center monorail. For bus times, visit tripplanner.metrokc.gov

What can I see this week with my Teen Tix pass?
MUSEUMS
Teen Tix admissions are $5.00 all day, every day at our museum partners. Thursdays are 2 for $10 days, so bring someone along!
American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music @ EMP
SEATTLE CENTER

American Sabor is the first interpretive museum exhibition to tell the story of the profound influence and impact of Latinos in American popular music. Rich with artifacts, instrument interactives, listening kiosks and films, the exhibition focuses on five major centers of Latino popular music production in the post-World War II United States—New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, San Antonio and San Francisco—which represent the diversity of Latino music. Each city section draws visitors into the broader histories and cultures that shaped these musicians’ contributions through artifacts, hands-on instrument interactives designed to teach key concepts, highly produced listening kiosks that allow critical listening and learning, three films created for the exhibition and interpretive text presented in English and Spanish.

OUR REVIEWER SAYS: “I learned quite a bit about a music genre that before the trip I was not too familiar with. I also had a blast listening to new music, checking out some very interesting outfits previously worn by famous Latino music contributors, and learning that the guy who made “La Bamba” famous couldn’t actually speak any Spanish!” – Read Renee’s whole review here

EMP is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

For more info, visit www.empsfm.org

EMP is located at the base of the Space Needle on the Seattle Center campus. They are served by buses 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 13, 16, 26, 28, 74, 82 and several others, along with the Seattle Center monorail. For bus times, visit tripplanner.metrokc.gov

MUSICAL THEATRE
A Marvelous Party @ ACT Theatre
DOWNTOWN

“I’m an enormously talented man, and it’s no use pretending I’m not.” “She stopped the show. But the show wasn’t really traveling very fast.” “I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.” – Noel Coward

A musical tribute to one of the most celebrated and versatile talents of the 20th century, this energetic revue showcases more than 34 Coward tunes along with comedic sketches, anecdotes and musings—all delivered by a cast of Seattle luminaries.

OUR REVIEWER SAYS: “The audience was mostly older people who were there for the Noel Coward wit. That did not stop others—such as myself—from having a good time and laughing at the amazing physical comedy and witticisms of Noel Coward. A Marvelous Party runs until July 13 at the ACT, and as Coward said ‘Tell your friends’.” – Read Paulina’s whole review here.

THEATRE
A Streetcar Named Desire @ INTIMAN

Few plays have the explosive power of A Streetcar Named Desire, considered by many to be the greatest American play ever written. Tennessee Williams won the Pulitzer Prize and other major theatre honors for his New Orleans-set masterpiece about Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski and the epic, sexually charged battle between “tender feelings” and “brutal desire” that enflames them both.

Note: INTIMAN recommends this play for people ages 16 and up.

Upcoming: FREE Outdoor Shakespeare by Wooden O Theatre

In war-torn Verona occupying forces have turned the streets for local citizens into a battlefield. Yet in this culture of violence hope emerges when two young strangers discover a love that makes them forget their historical bitter hostility. When friends, family and even faith conspire against their love, drastic measures lead to dire consequences. Romeo and Juliet is a timeless clarion call for peace and reconciliation in a conflict-ravaged culture.

SEATTLE CENTER

NOTE: There is no Teen Tix discount for Kung Fu Panda: The IMAX Experience

This week at the IMAX Theatre:

Wild Ocean 3D | Each year an unbelievable feeding frenzy takes place in the oceans of South Africa as billions of sardines migrate up the coast. The migration has provided an annual food source for both life in the sea and the people living along the African shores. Experience breaching whales, feeding sharks, diving gannets, and massive bait balls up close on the giant screen. Delve into an epic underwater struggle for survival and discover how business, government, and the local people have joined forces to protect this invaluable ecological resource.

Super Speedway: Racing with the Andrettis | delves into the death-defying world of Indy Car racing and weaves together the stories of some of the masters of the high-speed track. Super Speedway puts audiences in the cockpit of an Indy car and catapults them into world championship auto racing at mind-bending speeds in excess of 230 miles per hour.

Grand Canyon Adventure 3D | Set against the immense backdrop of the majestic Grand Canyon, Grand Canyon Adventure will take IMAX Theatre audiences on an exhilarating river-rafting adventure down the Colorado River in the company of a team of explorers who are committed to bringing awareness to global water issues.

Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure | Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure is a giant-screen film that tells the extraordinary true story of polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s now-legendary 1914-1916 British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. While never accomplishing its goal of the first crossing of the Antarctic continent, this expedition has become a larger-than-life testament to heroism and human endurance, with all 28 men surviving nearly two years in the barren, frigid Antarctic when their ship, Endurance, was caught in pack ice and eventually crushed.

Mummies: Secrets of the Pharoahs | Narrated by actor Christopher Lee (The Lord Of The Rings, Star Wars, and the original 1959 film The Mummy), Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs explores the mysterious world of ancient Egypt through the fabric of its ancient mummies.

TEEN TIX HOW-TO

Hey there Teen Tixer! Did you know that you’re a part of a huge community of arts-going teens? Yeah! There are more than 15,000 of you now. But it’s not enough to just be a Teen Tix member – Teen Tix is about experiencing the arts. Here’s how:

1. Get your pass: If you’re getting this newsletter, you should also have a little blue plastic Teen Tix pass. This pass is your ticket to $5.00 tickets at all of our participating venues. Lost your pass? Never got one in the first place? Go here

2. Find out what’s playing: What’s the best way to find out what you can see each week with your Teen Tix pass? You’re reading it. The Teen Tix e-newsletter will always tell you every single thing that you can see that week for $5.00 with your pass. It comes out every Wednesday evening right to your inbox. You can also read the newsletter on our MySpace blog: www.myspace.com/teentix and at our website: www.seattlecenter.com/teentix.

3. Go to the show! Teen Tix tickets are available day-of-show only. That means, anytime on the day that you want to go, you just show up at the box office of the venue you want to attend and buy your ticket. You can also purchase tickets over the phone on the day of the show by calling the box office. When you go to pick up your ticket, make sure you remember to bring your pass, some form of ID (like a school or state ID or drivers license) and your five dollars in cash. If you forget any of these things, you might not be able to buy your ticket.

IMPORTANT: Ticket availability is NOT GUARANTEED. Sometimes shows will sell out and there won’t be any day-of-show tickets available. How do you make sure there will be a ticket for you when you go? Call ahead and ask! The people who work in our participating box offices can usually tell you whether or not there will be Teen Tix tickets available on the day that you want to go. Give ‘em a call! They’re happy to help. The phone numbers for the box offices are always listed in the newsletter and on the Teen Tix website.

4. Bring a friend! On Sundays (at our performing arts venues) and Thursdays (at our museum venues) Teen Tix tickets are 2 for $10. That means that a Teen Tix member can bring anyone they like – including an adult or a child too young for Teen Tix – for just $5.00 more! Teen Tix also hold events called Teen Takeovers once a year at each of our venues. On these special days, Teen Tix members are invited to chat with artists, tour the venues, and bring someone along for just $5.00 more. Stay tuned to the newsletter for Teen Takeover announcements.

Still have questions? Visit the Frequently Asked Questions section of the Teen Tix website: www.seattlecenter.com/teentix/faqs.asp
