Celebrate with Seattle’s Vietnamese community at the Têt Nguyên Đán festival and usher in the "Year of the Ox." This annual Lunar New Year celebration welcomes the return of spring and chases out evil spirits with the traditional roaring lion dance and the crackle of firecrackers. Têt 2009 celebrates the theme - Youth and Dreams - through exhibits, children’s interactive arts and crafts, musical programs, fantastic food; and special this year, the Miss Washington competition. These festival highlights allow celebrants to reflect on the past year and make plans for the arrival of the dependable, calm, hard working and prosperous ox. Presented by Têt in Seattle.

Dr. Jane X. Luu was born in 1963 in South Vietnam and immigrated to the United States with her family as a refugee in 1975, when the communist government of North Vietnam took over the nation of South Vietnam. Luu excelled academically in the field of astronomy. As a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she worked with David C. Jewett to discover the first Kuiper belt object. In 1991, she was awarded the Annie J. Cannon Award in Astronomy. The asteroid 5430 Luu is named in her honor. Luu served as a professor at Harvard University and Leiden University in the Netherlands until she left academia and astronomy to work on instrumentation as a technical staff member at Lincoln Laboratory at MIT.
