Walter M. Sierra was born in Mexico City; he holds a bachelor’s degree from the U.N.A.M School of Music in classical percussion. After graduation. He relocated to NYC to continue with his music studies. within the first semester in an intensive English course, Walter discovered Latin Jazz in NYC and felt in love with it, immediately he started taking Jazz lessons with Horace Arnold (mentor), and Afro-Cuban-Latin rhythms with Frank Malabè (mentor), and many other private lessons and seminars, including great drummers such as Steve Gadd, Billy Higgins, Giovanni Hidalgo, Patato Valdez. After learning the basic drum and percussion rhythms for Latin Jazz, Walter knew that there is much more to learn and took on private lessons for Indian Classical Tabla with master Tabla & Sitar player Pandit Kinnar Seen. “Tabla is one of the most versatile and beautiful sounding hand percussion instruments I’d ever played; to master it, you need a lifetime of daily dedication” Leaving in NYC for 30 years and working as a manager at the famous store Manny’s Music, Walter has been very fortunate to have met mostly every professional musician in NYC and performed in many formal/ informal concerts, Jam sessions in the most popular NYC venues. Had done dozens of recordings and clinics in NYC jazz clubs and abroad. First professional gig at age 13 (TV live performance “Televisa”), two Latin America tours, three Mexico tours, two USA/Canada tours including (JVC jazz festival, Newport Jazz festival, Montreal International Jazz festival), one Europe tour, included (Copenhagen Jazz Festival & Varde Denmark’s fall music festival) Former percussionist for the Off-Broadway Show “The Last Musical Comedy”; also recorded an album (Take This Show on The Road) with the Famous Enid Levine (Broadway Musicals Composer) three of her songs went platinum in Europe and one in USA sang by Davis Gaines “Against the Tide”. Walter volunteered many years while residing in NYC in couple of non-profit organizations for disabled children, teaching drums and percussion, and summer camp ensembles for low-income families with children.

Recommended in Modern Drummer August-1990, (International drum teacher’s guide) Walter is grateful to be the only one teacher in NYC (borough of Manhattan) to be included in this guide.
